Steps to Certification

Step 1: Application Process

Qualifications for Program entrance: An applicant must possess, at a minimum:

To obtain a Program Application download the form on the right or contact the Court Services Division at 902-424-6877 to request an application package. Send the completed application, the required documentation and the $25.00 application fee, payable to the Minister of Finance, to:

Step 2: Certification Preparation Kit

When your application is processed, you will receive the Preparation Kit,
which includes:

Complete each module in sequence and submit them to the Court Transcriber Certification Program, Court Services by mail. An assessor will be assigned to review and provide feedback to you about each module. The modules are designed to familiarize you with the contents of the manual and the requirements for documents prepared for Nova Scotia Courts. Each module must be completed in the proper sequence, in accordance with set timelines, and passed by your assessor.

Step 3: Certification Test

To be eligible to take the Certification Test, upon completing and passing all three modules, a letter from the Program Administrator will be forwarded to you noting you are now prepared to move on to the certification test and request that you submit the required $75.00 Registration Fee, payable to the Minister of Finance, to:

Once the fee is received, the Program Administrator will contact you to schedule a test date and location.

Step 4: Court Transcriber Oath

Once you have successfully completed the Certification Test, you will be required to submit a sworn Court Transcriber’s Oath. You will then be registered as a Certified Court Transcriber and will receive a certificate and certification number valid for three years. A $75.00 Re-Registration Fee is required every three years thereafter to maintain certification.

Your Certification Number must be indicated on all transcripts you prepare.
