Academic Relief
Academic Relief is a policy for undergraduate students that faced extenuating circumstances that compromised their ability to fulfill academic responsibilities, such as attending classes or completing coursework, for an extended period within a PREVIOUS semester, may seek academic relief.
This policy may allow students to withdraw from all courses in that semester, with a "WP" (Withdrawal, exception) noted on their transcript.
Important: A recommendation from a campus support office (such as the Dean of Students Office, Cook Counseling Center, Schiffert Health Center, Services for Students with Disabilities, and the Office for Equity and Accessibility) or an external provider is required to be eligible.
Who is eligible?
- Undergraduate students only: This policy is specifically for those who are currently enrolled as undergraduates.
- Recent Semesters: Academic Relief is generally considered for courses taken during your last year of enrollment.
How to Apply for Academic Relief?
- Meet with Alexis Miller (required)
- How? Schedule an appointment through Navigate.
- Tip: Mention "academic relief" in the comments.
- Submit Your Request (once directed)
- Where? Fill out the online form (select "Request Academic Relief")
- Tip: Must be a current Virginia Tech student to access.
- Gather Documentation (if needed)
- What? Depending on your situation, you may need supporting documents from an external provider; have them complete the Outside Mental Health Provider Form .
What Happens After You Apply?
- Review Process: Your request will be reviewed by your Academic Dean, the Office of University Scholarships and Financial Aid, and other relevant offices to assess how it might affect aspects like financial aid or international status.
- Final Decision: The academic relief committee will make the final decision.
- Notification: You will receive an email with the outcome.
- Timeline: Expect the review process to notification to take at least 3-4 weeks depending on the caseload.
Check Your Status: You can check the status of your request at any time through the online portal.
